Moving to the ‘burbs from a big city (or ‘burbs in a different country) can be a big adjustment. Just remember why you’re here (every family is different, pick your favourites) and take the plunge. In this section, you’ll find loads of information about children’s activities, holiday clubs and courses and details of nurseries, daycare and schools in the area.
Chances are, you’ve chosen this area because you already have children or plan to have them. You will find that many Cobham and Oxshott residents have lived for years in London before choosing more space in the house, a guaranteed parking space and a garden over being walking distance from the office.
Here then, is what you can do and where you can go to keep the little people entertained now you’re in your new home. Click on the links below for detailed information.
Great exercise, great fun and a great way to tire your children out. Swimming is good for everyone. There are two main public pools in the area – Leatherhead Leisure Centre and The Spectrum, Guildford. Actually, there is a third public pool, The Excel Centre in Walton-on-Thames but it’s a bit out on a limb geographically so it’ll feel like a schlep to get there.
Leatherhead Leisure Centre – Guildford Road, Fetcham, Leatherhead, KT22 9BL Tel: 01372 377674 www.fusion-lifestyle.com/centres/Leatherhead_Leisure_Centre
Offers two pools – one for adults and one for children. It’s quite functional and sometimes a bit chilly, but a nice, modern swimming and changing area.
Guildford Spectrum – Parkway, Guildford, GU1 1UP Tel: 01483 443322 www.guildfordspectrum.co.uk
Easily accessible from the A3 without having to go into Guildford Town Centre, the Spectrum has four pools – adult, diving, children’s teaching pool and a HUGE free swim area with slides for all ages. Toddler Splash sessions are fixed a few times a week to give carers and small children access to the pool and slides in a calmer envirmonment without any big kids getting in the way. At normal times it’s fine to have a mix of ages so don’t be put off if the Toddler Splash times don’t fit in with your schedule.
For good weather days, there’s also the Guildford Lido – Stoke Road, Guildford, GU1 1HB Tel: 01483 449108 www.guildfordspectrum.co.uk Open between June and September, check website for opening times.
There are tons of venues and teachers to choose from. Here are the best of the bunch, selected from recommendations.
The Guildford Spectrum offers a huge schedule of lessons for babies upwards, group and individual. Call Customer Services for details. The teachers make lessons fun, are in the water with them and allow for play time at the end of each session. Johnny is highly recommended – although all the teachers are well qualified and proficient.
Aquademy Swimming – Parkside School, Stoke Road, Cobham, www.aquademy-swimming.co.uk
Lessons for adult and child non-swimmers upwards. A large weekly schedule of classes after school and at weekend and crash courses in the holidays (their word, not mine!).
SwimKidz at The Hilton, Cobham, Seven Hills Road South, KT11 1 EW
A daily schedule of lessons for babies and toddlers. The only gripe is that the pool is very small and lessons sometimes have to be confined to one end of the (small) pool to allow hotel guests to use the facilities too. www.swimkidz.co.uk Tel: Trish Hare – 07825 955533
