SupermarketsCongratulations, you’ve moved to supermarket heaven! The main supermarkets in Southern England are Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose. There’s also Marks and Spencer which sells high quality food, clothing and homeware (the others sell clothing, homeware, electricals etc but they are usually of a slightly more functional, lower-priced nature. Definitely not to be sniffed at though).Supermarkets are generally open from early morning (7am, 10am on Sundays) to late at night (10pm, 4pm on Sundays).

Esher: 105 High Street, Esher, KT10 9QE (this is on the way out of/into Esher where the Portsmouth Road/High Street meets)
Hersham: The Hersham Centre, KT12 4HL (Hersham is between Esher and Walton-on-Thames)
Walton-on-Thames: Hepworth Way, Walton-on-Thames, KT12 1BQ. NB – this is a ‘Little Waitrose’ you couldn’t do a full shop there and I have failed on more than one occasion to get the odd thing I need there so don’t make a big trip to Walton just to go to Waitrose. You’ll only regret it.

Independent Food and Wine Specialists The Cobham area is lucky to have some fantastic independent food and wine shops.
Surrey Hills Butcher, High Street, Oxshott. Under new management for the last two years, this butcher really is fabulous. The quality is extremely high with a large product range which includes, breads, cheeses, cook at home pies, sauces and vegetables.Deli You have a choice on this one:
Good Elf, Stoke d’Abernon Parade (this is the parade of shops near Cobham Stoke d’Abernon Rail Station)
At Home, Cobham High Street at the river end (rather than the Waitrose end)
Farm Shop
The Larder, The Medicine Garden, Downside Road, Cobham, KT11 3LU. I LOVE this place! There is always something new to see and usually something to sample as well. Wonderful cheeses and breads, biscuits, gifts, olives, snacks…. and the best fudge you will ever, ever eat.
Also, Garsons Farm, Winterdown Road, West End, Esher, KT11 3LS. This is a garden centre with a very well respected farm shop including butcher.
The Wine Reserve, Oakdene Parade (Cobham High Street, Waitrose end). The store has a fantastic selection of wines for all tastes and budgets and the guys are brilliant at helping you make a choice if you need it. I’ve had the pedigree of untold wines explained to me, often with photos on their phones of the people who made them!
Also – Majestic Wine, Anyards Lane, Cobham. They’re not independent but they’re very good, have lots of special offers and very knowledgeable staff.
DIY and Home Improvement For those spare lightbulbs, batteries and washing lines you’re going to need at least one visit to a DIY store. Cobham has two good hardware stores, Robert Dyas and Pennys of Cobham – both on the High Street. Pennys also do key cutting and engraving. If you can’t go local or need a DIY warehouse, you’ve plenty near enough to sort you out.

Well worth a visit and offering a surprisingly large range of DIY supplies is Alsford Timber. As the name suggests, they supply top quality timber but also an impressive selection of ironmongery, paint, general DIY supplies, paving, shingle and more – cheaper than the larger chains. They have also kindly offered friends of NTTN a discount code so they can pass on any cost savings available and have the chance to show more people in the area how good their products and customer service are. For more information, please complete the ‘Contact Us’ box on the NTTN homepage.

Alsford Timber

Cobham: 61 Portsmouth Road (opposite the BMW Garage), Cobham, KT11 1JQ Tel: 01932 863468

Leatherhead: 109-113 Kingston Road, Leatherhead, KT22 7SU Tel: 01372 376138

Leatherhead: Kingston Road, Leatherhead, KT22 7QB. This is listed as a ‘Mini Warehouse’. It’s big enough to have two floors plus an outdoor area and it’s opposite Tesco Leatherhead so you can stock up on bread and milk while you’re there.
New Malden: Shannon Commercial Centre, Beverley Way, New Malden, KT3 4PT. A couple of junctions up the A3 towards London is New Malden and one of the biggest B&Qs you will ever need. It has a pretty good cafe upstairs to make your trip really worth it.

Maybe a nose in front because you can collect Nectar points but there really isn’t much in it between B&Q and Homebase (although Homebase might have the edge on quality. And Nectar points).

Walton-on-Thames: New Zealand Avenue, Walton-on-Thames, KT12 1XA
New Malden: Kingston Road, New Malden, KT3 3RU. This is on the outskirts of Kingston on the London side of town. A much bigger store than Walton.
